Cloud storage is all the rage these days. From Box to Yandex and everything in between, it seems as though everyone has jumped on board with storing their data in a cloud environment. Everyone except the ultra security conscious, that is. If you categorize yourself in that bracket, then you should definitely check out Boxcryptor for Mac.
More and more people are getting to grips with extra levels of security in ‘secure’ applications and services. Boxcryptor for Mac is a next-gen 'on disk' encryption tool that aims to do just that.
The service works by taking files that are stored in cloud locations and it encrypts them using AES-256 and RSA encryption algorithms to secure the data. To set up Boxcryptor for Mac simply install the app, choose which cloud platforms to encrypt and select filename encryption (not available in the free version). As soon as any new files are stored on the Boxcryptor drive, they are automatically encrypted. To encrypt any existing files, just right click on the files in Finder (or Explorer) and enable encryption. To unlock the Boxcryptor folder and view your files, all you have to do is simply run the BoxCryptor for Mac app, navigate to the encrypted folder and enter your password.
Boxcryptor for Mac supports almost all cloud storage providers: Google Drive, One Drive, One Drive Business, Dropbox, Box, Amazon S3, CloudMe, iCloud, SugarSync, and Yandex to name a few.
- Download and install Boxcryptor in PC and you can install Boxcryptor 2.77.687 in your Windows PC and Mac OS. Boxcryptor is developed by Secomba GmbH and listed under TOOLS.
- Boxcryptor secures your data in the cloud, no matter if you use Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, or any other cloud storage provider. Access your encrypted files on all devices.
- Cryptomator does everything Boxcryptor does except it's free and open source, which means you can check the code for backdoors yourself, if you want. It also works on Linux, Mac and Windows. It makes encrypted copies of your files in a vault, which you can upload to, e.g. Dropbox, so that even Dropbox cannot see what you have in your files.
- First, I needed to set up Boxcryptor as a service. Services are the actions that are available from the contextual menu (i.e. A “right click”). To do this “right click” on the Boxcryptor app in the Applications folder, then select “Show Package Contents”. In Finder, navigate to the Contents:Resources folder.
